How to synchronize your HPAA membership with your LinkedIn account

These instructions apply if you are an HPAA member and already have a LinkedIn account.

Our volunteers cannot add you to the HPAA groups on LinkedIn you have to join through the LinkedIn system.

LinkedIn and Yahoo identify members by their email address, not by their name. With more than 27,000 members, the HPAA has to do likewise.

All current HP Alumni Association members are pre-approved for membership the HPAA's networking groups on LinkedIn -- using the email address you used to join the HPAA.

If your request to join one of the HPAA groups on LinkedIn was not automatically accepted, there are two possible reasons:

- The email address you originally used to join the HPAA began rejecting HPAA emails -- and you were therefore dropped from the HPAA roster.

- The email address on your HPAA membership is not on your LinkedIn account -- as either the primary address or as a secondary address.

If you no longer receive any emails with [HPAA] at the start of the subject line, you probably joined the HPAA with an email address that is no longer valid and were therefore automatically dropped from the HPAA roster.

To change the address on your HPAA membership or reinstate your HPAA membership, make your request here.

If you are receiving emails with [HPAA] at the start of the subject line, you need to add another email address to your LinkedIn account -- so that you can join HPAA groups on LinkedIn.

First, check that the email address you used to join the HPAA is one of the addresses on your LinkedIn account. (In addition, this is a good opportunity to make sure that all the email addresses on your LinkedIn account are current.)

You can have multiple email addresses on your LinkedIn account:

- Job leads, requests to connect, and other communications from LinkedIn go to the primary email address on your LinkedIn account.

- A secondary address ensures that you receive requests to connect and other communications from people who know you by that address.

We recommend that the primary address on your LinkedIn account be your personal address, rather than your work address. LinkedIn never exposes your email address to other members without your permission. Emails you send via LinkedIn have a linkedin.com return address and LinkedIn gives you control as to which types of email you receive via their system.

It is easy to set up a secondary address on your LinkedIn account.
