How to synchronize your HPAA membership with your LinkedIn account

If you are one of the more than 15,000 members of the HPAA, you have been pre-approved to join our LinkedIn groups. It only takes a minute to sync up.

Yahoo and LinkedIn are separate industry-standard services. Each requires a separate login.

Our volunteers can't add you to the HPAA groups on LinkedIn – you have to join through the LinkedIn system.

Online systems like LinkedIn and Yahoo identify members by their email address, not by their name.

LinkedIn lets you set up "secondary email addresses" on your account. Job leads, requests to connect, and other communications from LinkedIn go to the primary email address. A secondary address ensures that you receive requests to connect and other communications from people who know you by that address.

LinkedIn never exposes your email address to other members without your permission.  For example, emails have a LinkedIn return address, unless you choose otherwise.

The networking groups on LinkedIn allow you to search and reach those in the same group without a paid LinkedIn membership.

The HPAA has two networking groups on LinkedIn:

●  "HP Alumni" is limited to HPAA members.

●  "HP Connections" is much larger (30,000 members.) It is open to current and former employees of HP, HP acquisitions, and HP spinoffs.

You should join both groups for best LinkedIn networking. (Not all "HP Alumni" members have joined "HP Connections")

If you already have a LinkedIn account, follow these steps:

1.

Go to LinkedIn

2.

Click "Accounts & Settings" in the upper right corner, then "Email Addresses" in the right-hand column.

Check that all of your current email addresses – including the email you use for your HPAA membership – are shown as either primary or secondary addresses on your LinkedIn account. Be sure that they are all marked "Confirmed." (The address you use for HPAA can be either primary or secondary on LinkedIn.)

Now, jump down to step 3 below.

If you do not already have a LinkedIn account, setting one up is quick and easy.

1.

Go to LinkedIn

2.

When you set up your account on LinkedIn, include all of your current email addresses – including the email you use for your HPAA membership – as either primary or secondary addresses on your LinkedIn account.  (The address you use for HPAA can be either primary or secondary on LinkedIn.)

Job leads, requests to connect, and other communications from LinkedIn go to the primary email address. A secondary address ensures that you receive requests to connect and other communications from people who know you by that address. LinkedIn never exposes your email address to other members without your permission.

3.

For each primary or secondary address that is marked "unconfirmed," check the box for that address, then click "Send Confirmation Message." Log into that email account, find the "Please confirm your email address" message, and follow LinkedIn's directions in the email.

4.

On LinkedIn, click "Groups" in the left-hand menu.

●  If the "HP Alumni" group is listed with "Your membership is pending approval" in yellow, click "Withdraw request" to get LinkedIn unstuck. Click here: "HP Alumni" group, then click "Join Group."

●  If the group is listed without anything in yellow, you are already a member.

●  If the group is not listed, click here: "HP Alumni" group, then click "Join Group."

5.

Click "Groups" in the left-hand menu.

●  If the "HP Connections" group is listed with "Your membership is pending approval" in yellow, click "Withdraw request" to get LinkedIn unstuck. Click here: "HP Connections" group, then click "Join Group."

●  If the group is listed without anything in yellow, you are already a member.

●  If the group is not listed, click here: "HP Connections" group, then click "Join Group."

Between the LinkedIn system and our volunteers, your group memberships are normally approved within 48 hours.
