How to Post Job Opportunities

The Hewlett-Packard Alumni Association has members from a wide range of functions, including administration, business planning, consulting, customer support, engineering, environmental, engineering services, facilities, finance, human resources, information technology, legal, manufacturing, marketing, marketing support, operations, quality, public relations, sales, sales operations, training...

HPAA members are primarily located in the US. 75% of the members are located outside Silicon Valley. To reach additional HP alumni outside the US, please check our list of the many independent clubs, forums, and websites for former HP people around the world. Many carry job postings. HPAA's Social and Networking Directory

In order to post jobs, you must be either:

If you are a recruiter who is not an HP alumnus, you may apply to post jobs to HPAA Members

Posts are accepted at no charge. However, we do require that job posts follow the rules given below.

Please email your job posts to:  hp_alumni_jobs@yahoogroups.com

Posting Guidelines

These rules are generally applicable to all online job posting systems. If you post jobs to multiple lists, you shouldn't have to modify your posts for our group.

This list is strictly for specific job openings posted by HPAA members and recruiters. Other posts, such as network marketing solicitations, franchise offerings, or general business opportunities are not accepted.

The subject line is the key to getting results.

Please follow these guidelines so that members can quickly scan the large number of posts:

  • Subject: title, company (optional), location, additional qualifiers such as "short-term" or "local only." Maximum of 64 characters – long subject lines get truncated in many email systems.

  • Body: job description, requirements, contact information or URL. Use as much space as you need.

Good examples:

  • Software Engineer (Linux Kernel), Boston, permanent

  • Director Marketing Communications, Sacramento Area, CA

  • Senior Accountant - Singapore

  • Marketing Administrative Assistant, Redwood City, CA

  • Director of Alliance Development/Sales - Intuit - San Diego

  • Corporate Finance Specialist, Austin TX

  • Cognos Management Consulting Professional: See locations below

  • SOA Enterprise Architect, Toronto, Virtual position

  • Central Asia Project Manager - private sector development project

  • Embedded Systems SW Engineer - Silicon Valley

Please follow the subject line format to ensure that people don't miss your post when they are quickly scanning.

Subject Line:

  • Limit the subject line to 64 characters. Those of our members who check the posts using a browser only see the first 64 letters of the subject line. The members who receive the posts via email use various email programs and online email readers – and have varying screen sizes.

  • Use this order: title, company (optional), location, additional qualifiers such as "short-term" or "local only." This displays the most important information first for fast scanning by thousands of HPAA members worldwide.

  • Use a clear job title. The specific job title within the hiring company often uses terminology or acronyms unique to that company – the right candidate might miss your post.

  • Company name is optional. If the company name is confidential, skip that item rather than saying "Confidential."

Indicate the location in the subject line:

  • "Anywhere in Midwest," "90% travel," "Houston-based," "Work remotely" etc.

  • If too many locations to fit into the subject line, say "Multiple Locations," "Major Metro Areas," etc.

  • Giving a geographic area is often clearer than naming the specific city – "Chicagoland," "New England," "Bay Area," etc.

To make sure that the right people open your post:

  • Don't put "Job" or "Position" or "Needed" in the subject line. This list carries only jobs.

  • No need to include [HPAA Jobs] in the subject line. That is added automatically.

  • Do not put return, new line, or other special characters in the subject line. This can cause the line to be truncated.

  • Please don't include the recruiting agency name, "New posting," "Confidential," "Well-funded," "Great opportunity!" or other extraneous wording that slows down people scanning the many posts.  Put this in the body of the message. Thanks!

We prefer that you post each job separately. This allows the members to scan the messages – and ensures that your jobs are seen.

  • If you have multiple jobs in one area or one specialty, you may put them in one listing – as long as the subject line makes the jobs clear enough. If there is any doubt whatsoever about clarity, please use multiple posts.

  • Please do not include more than five jobs in one post.

Identify yourself and your role at the beginning of the post. Due to concerns about identity theft and resume-collecting, our members are very reluctant to respond to job openings posted by people who are unwilling to fully identify themselves.

  • If you are the hiring manager, please make that clear at the beginning of your post.

  • If you are forwarding a job opening that you have received, be sure to add something like: "Please reply to the person mentioned in the message, not to me" at the beginning of the post – otherwise, some of the replies will come to you instead of going to the person doing the hiring.

Bullets, boldface, logos, and other word-processing embellishments are automatically deleted or simplified. Just use ordinary plain text – not HTML or RTF.

Attachments (Word and PDF files, etc.) are automatically removed to prevent the transmission of viruses.

Implied age discrimination. To discourage age discrimination and help recruiters avoid inadvertently violating the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the HPAA may reject job posts that imply age discrimination. This policy is followed by other professional organizations, including the IEEE. Examples of unacceptable phrases: "Recent college grad," "1 to 5 years maximum experience," "1-5 years of experience", "Up to 5 years experience," "5 years maximum experience."

Privacy. We do not accept non-government job posts that require a Social Security Number for initial contact.

Posting frequency.  To keep the group as effective as possible for members and recruiters, an unfilled job may not be reposted in less than four weeks.

If you made an error, repost with "- Revised" in the subject line. The "Recall" command doesn't work outside your own company.

How to post

Please take the time to write a careful subject line – including the location – so that the people who qualify don't miss the message.

Then just paste the rest into the body as plain text and email it to: hp_alumni_jobs@yahoogroups.com

There will be up to a 72-hour delay before your submissions are emailed to our members.

If you have questions, please contact: HPAA Careers Director

Replies sent to those who post on this list must be limited to inquiries and résumés in response to a specific job opening.

Virus protection.  HPAA's forums have the Yahoo Groups anti-virus and anti-phishing measures enabled:

  • Attachments are automatically removed.

  • HTML-only posts are automatically rejected back to the sender

  • HTML segments in posts are automatically removed

  • Embedded Java code – such as a form submission script – is not executable

  • Hidden hyperlinks are expanded to make phishing visible

Legal considerations:

  • The HPAA Posting Policy and User Agreement applies to posts on all HPAA groups.

  • A job post is the responsibility of the author and does not signify an endorsement by the HP Alumni Association.
