How to Troubleshoot HPAlumni Email

There are several possible reasons that you are may no longer be receiving HPAlumni emails.

You may have resigned from HPAlumni by unsubscribing from the hp_alumni_association Yahoo Group – the master membership roster and announcement list for HPAlumni. If you unsubscribe from [HPAlumniAssoc] group, you will be unsubscribed from all optional HPAlumni groups.

An anti-spam mechanism may be discarding the emails or placing them in a special folder.

This could be due to:

  • a feature in your email program (such as the spam filter in Microsoft Outlook) or

  • an anti-spam program running on your system (such as Norton AntiSpam, McAfee SpamKiller, etc.) or

  • an anti-spam process at your ISP (such as SpamAssassin.) or

  • you may have inadvertently added one or more of the HPAlumni groups to your "blocked" list.  (One member accidentally did this while reading Hotmail with an iPhone.)

Here's the list of HPAlumni email addresses to include in your whitelist: HPAlumni Whitelist

Complaints from your ISP may have caused Yahoo Groups to close your membership.

To avoid being blocked by your ISP for apparent spamming, Yahoo Groups stops sending emails after a certain number of rejections from your ISP.

If you are having problems receiving emails from a Yahoo group...

  • If you do not have a free Yahoo ID, you will not have the ability to troubleshoot Yahoo Groups email problems. You need to Get full HPAlumni access.

  • If you have a Yahoo ID (i.e. full HPAlumni access) follow these steps:

  1. Go to "My Email Preferences" for Yahoo Groups

  2. Click on "Show History" for the email address or addresses in question

  3. Under "Last Bounced Message" you can see the part of the message sent by your ISP the last time it rejected an email addressed to you from Yahoo Groups. From the message, you may be able to decode whether your email account was full, your ISP was too busy, or your ISP has declared all mail from Yahoo to be spam, or some other problem.

  4. If there is a "Send Reactivation Request" button, click on it.

  5. Reply when Yahoo's test message reaches your email account.

  6. If the HPAlumni group in question no longer shows up on your list of groups, you need to rejoin HPAlumni.
