Acquisitions, divestitures, and spinoffs

This is the HPAA's unofficial directory of 163 acquisitions -- and 30 divestitures and spinoffs -- by HP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. (Minority stakes are not included, nor are acquisitions made by EDS.)

The most recent events are highlighted. Updated November 22. 2019.

Overview of the HP Breakup and related Issues: HP Breakup

Additions to the directory are suggested by HPAA members and verified via news articles or annual reports.

Other sources of information on HP's acquisitions and divestitures:

  • HP. The table of original press releases announcing major acquisitions since 2000 is no longer available on HP's Investor Relations site. We have a copy as of May 15, 2018. Go to the Internet Archive to use the links on the page, which still work: "Mergers & acquisitions announcements". (HP's list does not include minor acquisitions, divestitures, product line acquisitions, development team acquisitions, or acquisitions of customer IT departments through outsourcing contracts.)

  • Wikipedia. Links to news articles and press releases covering many acquisitions are provided in a table on the Wikipedia. (Note: Wikipedia articles -- since they can be written, rewritten, or edited by anyone -- may not be accurate or current, often change dramatically over time, may not cover all aspects of the topic consistently, and may not be written from a neutral point of view.)

Dates given are generally the date of closure, not the date of announcement.

Legal successor -- the company that currently has the acquired company's employee records and other legal responsibilities. Unless specifically indicated, the most likely legal successor for each company acquired by the Hewlett-Packard Company before the HP Breakup is still HP -- now called HP Inc.

Product successor -- the company that appears to currently have the majority of the acquired company's products. For example, the notation "(HPE to Micro Focus)" indicates that product responsibility most likely moved from HP to HPE to Micro Focus as a result of the HP Breakup.
